How to play Harmonica?

  • I just bought a 'Special 20: Key of C' Harmonica that I really like, and, have have a desire to learn how to play it. I want to start playing the Blues on it but I don't know where to start. I've looked on YouTube on how to play it and whenever I try to do it like they do, it doesn't sound like them - hence why I should learn how to play and what Harmonica is best. Where should I start? Are lessons the best choice? And how can I start to read tabs of the Harmonica to play songs I like on it? BEST ANSWER = 5 stars (*****) Thank you!

    The most painless way to learn that I know is this book: "Instant Blues Harmonica 9 Ed: Minutes Away From Blues and Rock Improvisation!" by David Harp. It comes with a CD as well as a C harmonica and I recommend it highly. Best of all it costs less than 12 bucks. http://www.amazon.com/Instant-Blues-Harmonica-Ed-Improvisation/dp/0918321727/ref=cm_cr-mr-title Also http://www.harptabs.com/ has well over 1000 songs.I'd also recommend playing along with CD's I pretty much taught myself with the help of some books, stuff on Youtube and lots of practice. I always have at least a couple of harmonicas in the car and play along with music.

As you know, the "secret" of blues harmonca is bending notes. The lower the key, the easier to bend. Make your next harmonica a blues harmonica in A or E. It is much easier to bend notes. If you want to sound like Bob Dylan or Neil Young, use the C key harmonica. If you want to learn blues harmonica, use key of A or E and listen to Junior Wells on a site like YouTube.
