What is a good first job for an 18 year old?

First job? any recommendations, where i will be likely hired?

  • My name is Ivon and I am 17 years old. I will be finishing grade 12 this june, and I really want to get a job so I am able to pay the courses I will be taking in college. I also want to start saving up so I can eventually move out, but mostly I want a job so i don't have to depend on my parents for everything and they don't have to give me money for all the things I need. My parents have already been taking care of me for 17 years, I don't want them to do it any longer because now that I am almost 18 I would LOVE to give them back what they have been giving me all this time. anyways, so I have been trying to get a job for over a year and I have not received any calls back (with my old resume), my new resume in my opinion is good, I got my first aid, food safe, and world host certificates this year. i am a very enthusiastic person and i am always willing to learn.. my question is, where do you guys think i can apply and get hired? i have experience ( i have worked in my aunts clothing store) and I also have volunteered in different places, this would be my first job and I really want someone to give me the chance to show what I can do!! any recommendations?? p.s: I don't really want to work at McDonalds :P

  • Answer:

Being 17 and in highschool you most likley have nothing for a resume or record just like anyone else looking for a first job. What you have won't help you much. Like me. (16 and looking) you will get hired anywhere that hires minimum wage. Doesnt necessarly have to be fast food. But maybe retail kr something. Just look around find something you like. And unless you got some good hook ups your going to be paid minimun wage on a part time job.

Step 1: Stop thinking you're too good to work at McDonalds. Right now, that's the sort of thing that you're actually qualified for. Fast food, retail, grocery stores, coffee shops and restaurants, etc. Ask for an application as most of these places will have an application form which they will much prefer to see completed than a resume (or hand in both). Make sure you get someone else to proofread your application and your resume.

The biggest demand for a job would probably be at a store or a fast food restaurant. So don't say no to McDonalds just yet, but try grocery stores along with clothing or corner stores.
