Can you tell me about practical nursing?

Can anybody tell me information about nursing?

  • I'm 18 turning 19 in June & when I graduate I plan on going to Lonestar College for nursing. Could anybody tell me how many years it would take for each degree & how much is made each hour/year so on? Just tell me all you know if possible. I'm curious & don't know much of what I'm about to walk into ,but I'm willing to learn. What diffrent type of nurses are there? Which one makes the most? Actual answers from nurses or studying in college students would be much much appreciated! Thanks :) -Brittany

I'm interested in the same thing! My health class teacher told me that you work your way up to be a registered nurse (they are like...the "top dogs" of nursing). You must be an LPN then a CNA (I forgot which comes first...I think you're an LPN then you work up to CNA then you're an RN). LPN's (or whichever came first) do the dirty work for CNA's. CNA's do the dirty stuff for RN's. And RN's are under MD's. That's all I know :/ Good Luck!!

Nurses can make anywhere from $14 to $40 an hour right out of school depending on where you live and where you work. The CNA is a certified nursing assistant, It's a six week program and they do a lot of the dirty work so to speak. They are very hands-on and make sure the patients are bathed, fed, walked, and their vital signs measured. A CMA can work in a nursing home and give most medications. The LPN is a one-year degree and can take care of stable patients and give most medications. The RN is a 2 or 4 year degree (depending again on where you live, some places require a 4-year degree). The RN can give all medications except anesthesia. The RN can give blood, start IVs and do all the things usually associated with nursing. A NP or CRNA are advanced-practice nurses with master's degrees that have worked as RNs and gone on for more schooling. The NP can write prescriptions and diagnose patients and do a lot of things that doctors usually do (but not all). The CRNA works in anesthesia and makes a ton of money ($200K or therabouts).
