Dirtbike or Sportbike?

Im ready to buy a motorcycle but im debating whether to get a street/sport bike like a YamahaYZF or a Kawi Ninja or should i get a dirt bike like a KTM or something like that. I live in the mountains but i work in the city. Which means i could put the dirt bike to really good use on the weekends. On the other hand i could put the street bike to good use getting to work every morning and evening, (1hr commute).
