Will a UK PS2 play American PS2 games out the box?

I would like to buy a pink PS2 slim that only appears to be sold out of the UK (at least from what I have seen on ebay and Amazon). I have heard mixed answers as to whether or not my American PS2 games will play on the console right out of the box. I do not wish to mod the PS2 but would like to know what are my options BEFORE buying it. Thanks.

No, it will not. PS2s are region locked. Without modding it, it will not play US games.
