How to make your xbox 360 headset work or xbox360 Live?

I just recently got a xbox live member ship and Bought an Xbox360 headset from walmart. I play GTA IV and when I plug my headset into it the microphone or earpeice doesn't work. The headset itself does work because I plugged it into my phone and it works fine I can use voice control and all that with it. Someone please give aguide or something if you think its a simple connection or something.

If you have the simple $20 microphone, you can just make sure the mic is UNmuted. If you have a different microphone feel free to msg me ill be glad to help. :)
