Good nesting material for pregnant rats?

How to adopt out baby rats?

  • A couple weeks ago I bought a female rat from a pet store (she was going to be used as a feeder, and it broke my heart), but today I got a surprise! The female gave no signs of pregnancy like nesting behavior or weight gain, but today I found 14 healthy pink babies in her cage! This is way more than I bargained for...I adore the mother already, and will of course make sure she and the babies have excellent care, I am just hoping to adopt out the babies rats when they turn six weeks and are weaned. I don't want to bring any to a pet store (obviously!) and I don't think their chances would be super at the SPCA. I will keep all the babies if that's what it comes down to, but I wonder how one would go about trying to get these babies homes. Craigslist? Petfinder?I honestly have no idea how one would go about these things. Are there such things as rescues for rodents? Thanks for any help you can offer. I want to do the right thing, if I can.

Awww, what's cuter than rat pups? Keep 1 or 2 female babies as companions for mama rat, especially if she was by herself before giving birth. Start asking among your friends whether they'd like to adopt some of the little guys. Insist on same sex pairs or trios. If you happen the live near Long Beach CA, contact me about possible adoption too. There are rodent/small animal rescues, but there might not be one in your area. Petfinder is a good place to start. Give mama rat some boiled egg for extra protein. You can gently handle the pups as soon as you like. Good luck with the babies. It's not inevitable that some won't survive-- 5 of our 7 rats are litter mates (adopted through Petfinder) from a litter of 18 & all but 1 lived.

I use Craiglist for my rats. Just so you know, females only have 10-14 nipples, so its unlikely all of your pups will make it, and if they do, they will be very, very small. Just a warning, you're dealing with a big litter, so cannibalism is likely.

Maybe somehow get them all up on petfinder.com?
