How to Fetch Gmail Contacts?

Backup android contacts to gmail?

• I have an android phone, and initially thought that it would be easy to sync my phone contacts with my gmail contacts - i.e. that on performing a sync my phone contacts (numbers etc) would appear in my gmail contacts, and vice versa. After syncing, my gmail contacts are not on my phone, but my phone contacts are not in my gmail contacts. Is there any way to do this? Thanks
