How can I get in shape for cross country?

  • I'm not in terrible shape, but I'm not the best at long distance running. I do run, but not very consistently and I can only run maybe a mile. I'm going to be a freshman in the fall and I'd like to try cross country this year. What should I do to get in shape for cross country?

  • Answer:

Ultimately, it's all about the mileage at this point. Just go for time or distance and keep on going, even if you have to barely jog. (just don't hurt yourself) I recommend working your way up gradually, with 5 or so miles at least 3 times a week being your goal by mid summer. Make all your conditioning runs extend past 20 minutes, that's when the most cardiovascular development starts to happen.
