What Is The Highest Blocking Moldable Earplugs?

How can I get authorized to use earplugs when I take the SAT?

  • I am hypersensitive to noise, and it's gotten me in a lot of trouble in the past (gradewise) for my midterms and final exams at school, due to my being distracted by all the noise in the room. I also cancelled my SAT subject test score last year because halfway through the exam, the kids next door had a 10 minute break in the hallway, and they were very loud. Last time I took the SAT in March, I brought earplugs, but the proctor said that earplugs weren't allowed, when she was reciting the directions/rules. So that time, I had to put them away, and I only got a 2070. I feel like my score should've been higher, because I was distracted by a lot of sound (tapping pencils, thigh rubbing, tapping feet, etc.) The thing is, I don't know if I would have some kind of medical reason to need earplugs, because my ears aren't SHARP as in I can hear better than normal; I just tend to hear everything during testing. Is there some kind of form to request the usage of earplugs? I know I can't just go to the proctor and ask, because they're really strict about the rules.. but I don't see why its a big deal. They're just earplugs, and they look nothing like earphones, and if they had any suspicions, I don't see why it would be so hard to just examine them after a section and determine whether they were or weren't. Please help; I'm taking a subject test in a week (the same test I cancelled last year), and I really need a good score. Or, this would be very risky, but do you think I could pull off just putting them in anyway? My hair usually covers my ears.

  • Answer:

You should call College Board and ask your question. My guess is that you may need an ADD diagnosis or something of that nature for them to agree to that accommodation. And for you to have already scored in the top 4%, it's unlikely that they would agree to any accommodation at all. For the general student population, they are expected to have to tolerate mild distractions and still do well on the test. Which you did. If you are unhappy with your score, then it's really a matter of practice at this point. And @ "Tax Queen" - you have NO business accusing someone of lying about their SAT scores. Ridiculous.

Most people never score above 1600 even though the scale is higher. I seriously doubt you got a 2070. If you did and you didn't have ear plugs, you should not have any worries my friend. I am about to take the CPA exam and I know that I am allowed to wear foam ear plugs so I would look on the website or call the SAT corporation that makes the rules and get some clear answers from someone. Maybe you still have time to get something in writing to take the proctor.
