Where can I find an Asian market in Sydney?

Train station (platform) height in Sydney (City Rail)?

  • Hi, Nowadays, I'm a trainee and I'm doing some market study of train sectors in Asia and in Australia (Sydney). My company asked me to search for some information and there is one that is REALLY hard to find on the Internet: the height of train stations in Sydney. If someone, by a chance, know the answer to this question? Any help would be much appreciated! Regards, Pyoter

  • Answer:

I dont this this is a joke questions as it is controversly discussed in Switzerland. Here we have two different heights, 55cm for standard railways, 35cm for some special trains (and even 0cm for some platforms at old stations ;)). Anyways: I have no idea about Sidney, but maybe youll find something if you look at information about the City Rail cars. There might be data sheets available. I suppose that the height of the floor level equals the height of the platforms. If this doesnt help: Send a mail to the company. I dont think that this is some kind of company secret (as anyone who lives there could easily just measure it).

Probably every station is different, and it depends on which height you want, from the rails to the platform, from the rails to the top of the roof, or from the platform to the roof. If you don't give specifics, no one can answer your question properly. Even the height from the rails to the platform varies from station to station. I also suspect, that due to the vagueness of the question, and you are a trainee, someone is pulling a joke on you, like sending someone to a shop and asking for a left handed screwdriver! EDIT. You still haven't improved the meaning of the question, but I will guess you mean the height of the carriage floor above the platforms. If they are anything like Melbourne, which they probably are, we have four different makes of train operating, and each one is a different height above the platforms. Also, unfortunately, platform heights at many stations vary so much that they have to use a voice over to warn patrons to "Mind the Gap" at some stations. One answer says the platforms should be a standard height, yes, but unfortunately they are not. For more useful information get in touch with Siemens, they make one of the brands of train here, and they would probably tell you what you need to know. Also, tell your bosses the Victorian Government has $65 million to spend on new carriages.

Liam..

There are British made trains working in many countries and each country making an order to the manufacturer makes its own specifications in order for the vehicle to be suitable for use on its own system. It would be regarded as a safety violation in many jurisdictions for some trains to be at platform height and other trains to be significantly above platform height simply because modern legislation takes into account the needs of disabled and visually impaired people.
