How hard is it to get a railroad job?

How do I get a job on the railroad?

• I've loved trains ever since I was a little kid. My dream career is to be a locomotive engineer or conductor. I would love to pursue this dream, but the problem is don't know where to begin. I've looked up various schools for railroad training (NARS, Modoc, etc.), but they're expensive and I've heard very mixed reviews. Some say you don't need specialized training but I think it would give me a leg up when looking for a job. So I ask, what is the best way to get a job as a brakeman/conductor/engineer on the railroad?

  I've answered this question before but i'll do it again.I've often wondered how they pick employees.I've seen them hire people I wouldn't hire for any job.I've also seen people I thought would make great rails that they wouldn't give a second look at.So honestly I don't know what to say except to just start putting in applications.All the Class 1 railroads have websites where you can apply.I will tell you that in my 36 years on the railroad I have yet to meet anyone that was a graduate of any of the railroad schools.I'm for sure not saying they aren't out there,just that I have yet to run across one.Good luck and I hope your dream comes true.
