Should I move to Chicago or Philadelphia?

What is the best city for stage actors to find work, Philadelphia or Washington, DC?

  • I'm a theatre actor looking to relocate soon just for a change of scenery and a want to live in/explore/experience another city. I want to also move somewhere where there are a lot of options for finding work. I do not want to move to New York City or Chicago just yet. I want to build up my resume and give myself time to get my equity card so that directors and agents will take me seriously.(I've heard that the first question a director will ask you in NYC is, "Do you have your equity card?". They like you to already have it). Anyway, I have narrowed it down to two cities with relatively smaller markets but lots of opportunities: Philadelphia and Washington, DC. Can anyone familiar with these two places weigh in on the pros and cons of the market for actors in these two places and what to look forward to? Also, in your opinion, which is BEST? (I know that question is relative, depending upon the person, but I'm just asking for personal preferences, choices and experiences). Thank you.
