Has London changed alot in the last 10 years?

  • Sadly I now live too far to ever get to London but from the outside at least it feels like the City has some what changed so hear me out. Up until my teens I always visited London frequently with my parents as it was a City that had really caught my imagination I loved and enbraced everything about the city. You could feel the glamour wealth the history and the aura London possesses but most of all it was a City that was virtually 24/7 it wouldn't matter if it was 10pm on a Sunday night or the 3am on a Saturday morning the roads would always be hiving full of cars and traffic. We would never dare dream of driving into Central London and I believe the last time I ever went to Central London was around 2-3 months before the CC began and so it was still as hustly and buzzly as I had ever known it to be. I know many people hate cars everywhere but for me the noise and the atmosphere is what makes big cities so great it made you feel so alive and it gives London a really lively vibrant feel that very few places in the world could match. This is just my personal opinion and I could be very much mistaken but looking in from the outside I kind of get the impression Central London is a shadow of what it once was. Of course the level of pedestrians roaming the streets and the huge numbers packing the tubes will forever be the same but the level of cars on the road seemed to have declined hugely. I've seen plenty of recent London video's on youtube with motorcycles, cars, buses etc all driving through busy area's like Westminster, Hyde Park, Picadilly etc but in all honesty the traffic seems a hell of alot lighter almost unrecognizable. I haven't seen any youtube video's that show London buzzling like it used to be and I also look on the BBC London jamcam camera's and again it almost feels as if things have changed and nothing is like it used to be. I very much doubt you'd see anything like the video's below I posted http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAMAr8y-Vtw http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6587353808966495069# I would very much appreicate your views on whether im being short sighted or whether I am infact right in my judegment.

  • Answer:

I don't think the traffic in central London has declined much at all. It may have done a little when the CC charge came in, but I can't say I have noticed much difference. I quite often work in the West End and the roads are always full. Perhaps it depends on the time of day you are looking at the cameras. There are a lot of roadworks at the moment and quite often, routes are closed which may give the impression nothing much is on them.

Yeah London has changed quite a bit over the years in terms of traffic. The congestion charge, difficult in parking, high cost of using car parks and the increasing cost of petrol have forced many people to seek alternatives means of travelling around in London. There have been an increase in Mopeds in London as they are exempt from the congestion charge, easy and free parking in most places as well as cheap in terms of petrol. There have also been an increase in the number of cyclist as the Mayor has introduce the Barlcy cycle hire across London making it easier and cheaper for people to hire a bike out. On the buses the famous route master have been withdrawn (except on to 2 particle routes) as these where inaccessible for disable people and those with luggage. They where replace by the bendy buses which was then scrapped because of fare dogging.

I don't think London has changed much in the last 10 years. It always was pointless driving there because of the scarce and expensive parking spaces. London has excellent public transport including frequent train services from just about anywhere else to London. I'm greatly in favour of the congestion charge as I believe the time wasted in traffic jams by essential car and van users damages the economy, and the pollution from cars is very damaging to health; I think commercial vehicals should be exempt from the charge but it should be extended to the whole of London and other major cities too
