For what purpose is palm oil used?

Anoint our head with...oil?? What does this means in the Bible?

  • I believe the spiritual sense of anointing refers to the Holy Spirit. The LORD Jesus Christ is the anointed one. As Jesus is the Word of God, He came as He said "To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." Luke 18-19 God anointed His word. And God anointed many men of faith in the past, so I think it's like, when God anoints someone, He consecrates him to fulfill a purpose (Jesus fulfilled the law). the chosen people of God, (prophets, and men of faith) were anointed with a specific purpose to signify several things, like God’s blessing and consecrate someone's life to God to prophecy or call people to repentance. But what about the physical anointing with oil? as I read In patriarcal times, people were anointed with oil (Exodus 29:7; Exodus 40:9; 2 Kings 9:6; Ecclesiastes 9:8;... ). Jesus said: "But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you." Matthew 6:17-18 I think I understand this spiritual sense, anoint is like consecrate our life to God, when God anoints somebody, He consecrates him/her as somebody with an specific purpose. But "anoint your head with oil" is what I don't get.. James wrote about it in James 5:14 I looked up the definition of "anoint", and it says: "Smear or rub something with oil (or any other substance)." If it's with oil, as in the past, How is it? with what kind of oil..? I don't think that the cooking oil, right? I try to think about it.. and I remember my grandfather used to comb his hair with grease hair.. so, is it correct in this sense If "anoint our head" could mean "comb your hair" like for example .. some substance like hair gel.? Would understand why Jesus told us to wash our face and anoint our head when fasting, so that it is not evident that we're fasting..? What do you think about it...? Is there a special oil to anoint?

It's all the things, let me explain. It is a physical act. It says this, you do this. As it happens, physically, oil is very good for you, makes the skin glow, makes it look as if you are not fasting. When we fast, toxins are drawn out of the body, and this will change the palor of the skin. So, literal, yes. But when Jesus is speaking, it is always also spiritual, because that oil referred to what was done for kings, and when we become Christian, we become part of a 'priesthood', and one with the King of Kings...awesome!! The oil is also of the Holy Spirit. So it's not JUST the act of the oil, of putting the oil on the person. It is YOU doing this in FAITH, knowing the Holy Spirit is embued upon that person. We notice it is the 'elders of the church', so those really full of faith, knowledgable about scriptures, knowing the person very well, so lots of agape love. So, it's the whole thing, cannot be divided, should not be divided.

Olive oil mixed with sweet perfumes, much like women and men of today dabble perfumes and colognes on their heads. The Holy Spirit is the sweet Anointing Oil of God He gives to all who believe upon Jesus. Have you received the Baptism of The Holy Spirit?

Dear Perdoname, James 5:14 is referring to a spiritual salve that is applied to a spiritually sick person by the elders in the congregation. As olive oil is refreshing to the head, a person who is sick in a spiritual sense is admonished to go to the elders who can prayer over the individual, and figuratively grease his head with oil, in the name of Jehovah. And the prayer* of the righteous elders can have a great effect in helping to make the indisposed one well. This salve, is medicinal in nature, and not referring to an anointing of oil which you are referring to. ETA: The copy and paste from the Insight book above me is about anointing and does not apply to the scripture you are asking about in James 5:14, although it is good information on anointing.

*** it-1 pp. 113-114 Anointed, Anointing *** Anointing. When a person was anointed with oil, the oil was put on his head and allowed to run down on his beard and onto the collar of his garments. (Ps 133:2) During the times of Biblical history, both the Hebrews and some of the non-Hebrews ceremonially anointed rulers. This constituted the confirmation of their official appointment to office. (Jg 9:8, 15; 1Sa 9:16; 2Sa 19:10) Samuel anointed Saul as king after God had designated Saul as his choice. (1Sa 10:1) David was anointed as king on three different occasions: once by Samuel, later by the men of Judah, and finally by all the tribes. (1Sa 16:13; 2Sa 2:4; 5:3) Aaron was anointed after his appointment to the office of high priest. (Le 8:12) Afterward, Aaron and his sons had some of the anointing oil along with the blood of the sacrifices spattered upon their garments, but Aaron was the only one who had the oil poured over his head.—Le 8:30. Things dedicated as sacred were also anointed. Jacob took the stone on which he rested his head when he had an inspired dream, set it up as a pillar, and anointed it, thus marking that place as sacred; and he called the place Bethel, meaning “House of God.” (Ge 28:18, 19) A short time later Jehovah acknowledged that this stone had been anointed. (Ge 31:13) In the wilderness of Sinai, at Jehovah’s command, Moses anointed the tabernacle and its furnishings, indicating that they were dedicated, holy things.—Ex 30:26-28. There are instances in which a person was regarded as being anointed because of being appointed by God, even though no oil was put on his head. This principle was demonstrated when Jehovah told Elijah to anoint Hazael as king over Syria, Jehu as king over Israel, and Elisha as prophet in place of himself. (1Ki 19:15, 16) The Scriptural record goes on to show that one of the sons of the prophets associated with Elisha did anoint Jehu with literal oil, to be king over Israel.

No, to anoint with oil means to pour oil over one's head. Yes, there was special oil for anointing used by the Levite priests. When kings or priests were anointed a large bottle of oil was poured over their heads until the oil soaked their beard, clothes and the were standing in a puddle of oil. All the utensils used in the Temple were anointed with oil as well. The trinity comes from ancient Babylonian worsjip.
