Question about intelligent design?
-
I have a question about the "point" of teaching intelligent design in school. People go to school to learn **** right? **** that can in some form be applied to solve certain problems, i learned calculus so i could find the optimum solution to certain problems. i learned chemistry to understand and predict what would happen when i mixed x with y and why this could help me e.g. the synthesis of nylon. i learned biology to try to understand how and why cells act the way they act and how (to some degree) we can control our cells with drugs and by controlling other factors so we can gain beneficial results for our selves e.g. drugs that lower blood pressure. I also learned the theory of evolution so that i could understand how and why (for example) over prescribing drugs can cause bacteria to become resistant to the drugs and how this could eventually produce super bugs. I'm just wondering why, people would want to get intelligent design to be taught in schools, what kind of problem does one apply intelligent design to? Telling me that someone created all complex life doesn't tell me anything about how it works. so i'm just wondering, can anyone give me a reason as to why intelligent design should be taught in schools? i cant understand why people were trying to get this done, what were the children supposed to do with the "knowledge" they "learned" from intelligent design class?

This is from the Discovery Institute FAQ (one of the leading ID groups): -Is Discovery Institute trying to eliminate, reduce or censor the coverage of evolution in textbooks? No. Far from reducing the coverage of evolution, Discovery Institute seeks to increase the coverage of evolution in textbooks. It believes that evolution should be fully and completely presented to students, and they should learn more about evolutionary theory, including its unresolved issues. The true censors are those who want to stop any discussion of the scientific weaknesses of evolutionary theory. -Should public schools require the teaching of intelligent design? No. Instead of mandating intelligent design, Discovery Institute recommends that states and school districts focus on teaching students more about evolutionary theory, including telling them about some of the theory's problems that have been discussed in peer-reviewed science journals. In other words, evolution should be taught as a scientific theory that is open to critical scrutiny, not as a sacred dogma that can't be questioned. We believe this is a common-sense approach that will benefit students, teachers, and parents. -Is teaching about intelligent design unconstitutional? Although Discovery Institute does not advocate requiring the teaching of intelligent design in public schools, it does believe there is nothing unconstitutional about discussing the scientific theory of design in the classroom. In addition, the Institute opposes efforts to persecute individual teachers who may wish to discuss the scientific debate over design in a pedagogically appropriate manner. http://www.discovery.org/csc/topQuestions.php

The only reason ID should be taught in schools is because of pressure from powerful religious groups. They aren't interested in the future or education of the children; only in swelling their ranks. Which is to say, there is no good reason for teaching non-facts. Evolution is the only game in town. A person is perfectly free to accept the fact of evolution as well as hold religious beliefs. Many people actually do.

It's just a sneaky way of teaching creationism. Their mantra is "teach the controversy" (between evolution and creation). Sheer nonsense, as there is no controversy except in the minds of those who think Genesis can be used as a science textbook.

I have no problem with 'intelligent design' being taught in schools, just as I have no problems with students learning about Greek myths and legends or reading fictional novels. The issue for me isn't whether or not we teach people about alternative views that existed or do exist. The issue is having ID taught in science classes when ID is non-science. ID basically says 'God created everything'. It doesn't explain any aspect of that design. It doesn't explain why God populated our world with flesh-eating bacteria. It doesn't explain why humans have organs, like the appendix, that we no longer use. It doesn't explain why nerves in a giraffe don't just travel across the chest and, instead, travel up the neck, do a U-turn, and travel back down. It doesn't explain why we have a solar system of 9 (or 8 if we exclude pluto) planets if only one is populated. It doesn't explain why life-threatening asteroid impacts or gamma ray bursts happen. It doesn't explain why the universe looks different in the past to what it looks like now. ID is a 'I dunno ... but God did it'. And therefore deserves to be taught, shown to be nonsense, and placed in a class alongside other things we used to believe like ancient Greek myths or the belief that the sun revolved around the earth!

The typical argument is that schools need to teach both "Theories" what most people fail to understand however is that in science a theory is a verified hypothesis, for example gravity is considered a theory. However since Intelligent Design is not a verified hypothesis it can in no way be equated with evolution.

The judge in the Dover case, said ID is just creationism in another form. And the reason why it is in the schools, is the fundie Christians want religion in the schools, and this is the way they sneak it in. Intelligent design is the Trojan horse of religion.

Obviously you are already approaching the subject matter with a bias. The object of learning is to discover the truth and then apply that truth. You state evolution is what causes bacteria to become anti-bacterial resistant, but if in fact that is a matter of adaptation and micro-evolution, you are the one who is making wrong assumptions and wrong assumptions cannot lead to sound conclusions. http://www.reasons.org/podcasts/science-news-flash/antibiotic-resistance-evidence-for-evolution http://www.signatureinthecell.com/
