How can I get my national insurance number?

How old do i have to be to get my national insurance number?

  • I have been told that you can get your national insurance number 3 months before you are 16 is this correct? If not then can only get it exactly on my 16th birthday? And if i can get it before how to i get it? I would have a possible job but they need me to have a national insurance number which is really annoying if i cant get it yet because most people in my year have it but i dont which i think is really unfair :( Please help??? Thanks.

    They are sent out in blocks several times a year in numerical order. So some people get it before their 16th, some after. Inform your employer that you do not need this number until you are 16, as you will NOT have to pay any NI until you are 16. You can still start work at 16 without it and the NI payments can be caught up with. I have done this many times as an Employer in the UK. Note: there is no longer any cards just a letter. Don't loose it, you will need it for the rest of your life.

You'll be sent a National Insurance number automatically just before your 16th birthday if both of the following apply: •you live in the United Kingdom •your parents or guardians are getting Child Benefit for you If you're between 16 and 20 years old and haven't received a National Insurance number contact the National Insurance Registrations Helpline on Tel 0845 915 7006 for advice. Lines are open 8.30 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Friday.

I got mine after I turned 16, but some people get them in the year of their 16th birthday, but before they turn 16, I think they might be sent out in certain months.
