What's the best way to get to Northwestern University?

What is the best way to get a bigger raise,?

  • Ive been with my bigbox retail company for almost 4 years now, and I do like the job I have and am very grateful to even have a job. Right now I am a full time student at a university, and work 35 to 40 hours a week, plus overtime occasionally. I get paid 9.70 currently and have gotten a raise at each yearly review(the companies raises are very small about 30 cents each time). I have never been written up, never had a complaint and i am knowledgeable in every department in our store and am one of the head members of our internet order management systems. I feel that all the managers like me except the overall store manager as I wont brown nose to him or anyone else. Even my district manager knows me and likes me! Anyways I have realized I am one of the lowered paid employees, and I have also found out that people that have just started at a lower rank than me make on average 11to13 dollars an hour. I have also found out that the few employees that have been there as long as I have make 11to13 as well. I know people lie but ive seen documentation as well. Anyways I have my yearly review coming up and I want to know whats the best way to get a bigger raise. Ill be happy at 10 as thats the next increase I have predicted, but I feel that with the amount of work, experience, and knowledge I have I should be paid at least the same amount as the new hires. It sucks being the one who has to also train a lot of the new hires knowing they may a few bucks more than you. But once again Im grateful for the amount im paid and that i have a job. I just want some valid ideas of what to bring up. FYI- I know that its not necessarily a good thing to ask how much other employees get paid, but i did anyways.

  • Answer:

My recommendation is to prepare for your yearly review. What I mean is to create a plan that positions your knowledge, accomplishments, skills and responsibilities in a way that highlights your contributions to the store, the company. You need to help them see how much you care, how dedicated you are and how you show up each shift ready to do your best. Think back on your past reviews, the format, questions they ask, responses they give to requests for a raise..learn their tactics and build a plan to negotiate yourself a higher wage or some other type of perk that you assign value towards. Frame up your positive contributions in a away that illustrates how you help them earn money, save money or adds to a better customer experience. Hope this helps. Good luck.
