Anyone ever read The Blind Watchmaker?

Writers (or anyone) what is the first book you ever read?

  • Or had read to you? NOW BEFORE YOU ANSWER I want to clarify: the first non-kid or non-picture book you ever read? Like a real piece of literature (and before you hate on me, I know kids books can be epic too, but that's not what I want to know right now.) For instance, mine was when my dad read me the Hobbit when I was five. You can debate on whether that's a kid's book or not, but whatever :P And a year later when I was six he read me LOTR. (In case you couldn't tell, he's an awesome uber-nerd engineer who got me to love reading.)

  • Answer:

It was the horse stories: Misty of Chincoteague (?) types, and the Paddington Bear stories (not for adults, but not picture-book either).

I don't really remember. I know I had Bambi Gets Lost memorized when I was about 4 so I could turn the pages and it 'looked' like I was reading (my Dad has it on super-8 somewhere). The first book I remember having a real impression on me was The Ghost Next Door when I was about 10. I read it over and over and since then I've always been in love with owls. After that, I was all about Piers Anthony. Not as sophisticated as LoTR, I'm sure. *edit* Xanth is great, but Incarnations of Immortality is even better :)

I remember that the first real grown-up book I ever read was Addie Pray by Joe David Brown. I was 12, and it was a real milestone in my life to read one of my mom's grown-up novels.

Depends on how you define a kid's book. I cut my teeth on Enid Blyton; but I think the first purely adult book I read was an Agatha Chistie.

probably Neznaika on the Moon or The Adventures of Buratino
