Which of the following solutions would be expected to experience the largest deviation from the expected van't?

  • Which of the following solutions would be expected to experience the largest deviation from the expected van't Hoff factor? ? 1.5 M NaCl X 0.5 M CH3OH X 0.010 M NaCl X Both NaCl solutions would have the same deviation X 1.0 M glucose why is it 1.5 NaCl??? explain...

  • Answer:

The methanol and glucose are non-electrolytes and are very soluble in water. The van't Hoff factor should be close to 1.0 for both of these solutions. For strong electrolytes, such as the sodium chloride solutions, the van't Hoff factor is dependent upon the concentration of the solute. The solutions would not have the same deviation as the concentrations are different. The answer of 1.5 M NaCl is the highest concentration of ions and therefore the greatest van't Hoff factor deviation.
