Here is my essay:: Art has a much deeper meaning than what we get from first look. The style of art can teach us about the time period in which it was created, and the artists who created it. Every piece of art has a unique way of telling a story or portraying evidence of our magnificent past. The Pallet of Narmer of the Old Kingdom, created in 3000-2100 BCE is an example of a piece of art in which, at first sight, may not be appreciated to its full artistic potential. In Egyptian art, the Pharaoh is the highest rank of power. Hieratic scaling is used to make the pharaoh in the Pallet significantly larger than other figures. Considering the lack of technology and tools during this time period, this low-relief carving represents the incredible artistic style of this time period. The staff of Oranmiyan at Ife, also carved out of stone, made in 800-1000 CE represents the child of a god and a human princess. The Pallet of Narmer uses a zoomorphic interlace of animal necks. The compartmentalized function of the back of this Pallet shows the different ranks of power, with peasants on the bottom and sacred, worshipped animals at the top. This relates to the belt buckle of the Early Medieval time period of 500-1000. The golden belt buckle uses a zoomorphic interlace of snakes, displaying an intricate and beautiful design. At first look, the buckle looks like strings or knots tied together in a pattern. However, the buckle is displaying an animal of fear and power. An interesting aspect of the belt buckle is that the snakes mouths are actually eating the tails of their own body, creating a never ending pattern throughout the piece of art. This buckle was created in a sand or mold casting. The artistic styles portrayed in the Pallet of Narmer and the belt buckle appear different, but convey the same message. Animals are used in both of these works of art to portray power and royalty. The tightly woven composition of the belt buckle can relate to a work from the post impressionism era: Starry Night, 1889. The brush stroke in this painting is very deliberate and choppy, and everything seems to take on a movement. The belt buckle also appears to have an aspect of movement to it as its woven pattern depicts snakes. Starry Night is a painting that reflected Van Goghs feelings. However, at first look it appears to be a beautiful depiction of a small town on a beautiful moon-lit night. The Pallet of Narmer may just look like a stone carving to many people, however, it had a deep meaning to those of that time period. It displayed the pharaoh standing over a peasant, about to hit him showing the hierarchy of status. Papyrus is also portrayed in this carving with the head of a peasant on top of it, portraying the low status of them. Many people would not realize that this pallet is actually used to hold make-up of Pharaoh Narmer. This stone pallet can be related to the Staff of Oranmiyan because at first look, it is just a tall stone sculpture. However, to the African tribes of Yorubaland, this staff represented a God and founder. It has a deep religious meaning to Africans that from first sight we would never have imagined. Art should never be judged by first sight as the historical references and meanings behind art can have a much deeper meaning. Throughout history, art represented many different things from religious beliefs to peoples emotions and thoughts. It portrays our past, and can teach our future.
