What happens when ALL the ice in the ARTIC ice cap melts?

What happens to the water when ice melts?

  • So, there is a cup completely filled to the rim with water. However, there is an ice cube floating at the top. What happens when the ice melts? A) spill over B) lower in level C) neither I think it's C because it is possible for a cup to have a little bit of water at the top of the rim of the cup without it actually spilling over due to the fact that water is "sticky" (not sure if that makes sense). But, the common answer would be A. Help, please?

  • Answer:

it is (c), because due to melting of ice, water formed will have the same volume as that of ice before melting, so the level of water remains the same.

C) neither *According to Walker Physics 4th ed. * Since the ince cube floats, it displaces a volume of water equal to its weight. But when it melts, it becomes water, and its weight is the same. The melted water fills exactly the same volume that the ice cube displaced when floating. As a result the water level is unchanged.

B) lower in level, because when water is liquid then it takes less space than when it. Is ice

Walter

neither according to page 516

Wesley

B) lower in level. Ice, oddly is less dense than liquid water. So because the volume of the ice is greater than the liquid equivalent when the ice melts is takes up less space. So the water level decreases.

Ice take's up more space than water, so if it melts the water level should lower, but i'm 14 so don't just take my word for it, i might be wrong.

Tim

yeah you know that ice is the solid type of water, so it doesn't matter if you shake water into ice. It's just like multiply 2*3 or 3*2
