Food Inc. The Documentary Questions?
-
I have a homework assignment which requires me to answer questions about this documentary if someone could answer some or all of these questions i'd greatly appreciate it thanks. Here are the questions: 1) The first segment of the film states that the “industrialization” of food began with the development of the fast food industry. Does Kenner’s description of the development of McDonalds sound Marxian? Is this a fair assessment, or does it show the filmmaker’s bias? Explain. 2) Richard Lobb of the National Chicken Council says in the film, “In a way, we’re not producing chickens, we’re producing food.” What does this statement mean? Do you agree or disagree with it? Should the food industry raise animals used for food in the most cost effective way? Does this help all involved, or should it be seen as a violation of morals and therefore be outlawed? Should the government even be involved in such decisions? Explain your answers. 3) Kevin’s mother (her son’s death was caused by e-coli bacteria) says, “Sometimes it feels like industry was more protected than my son.” What do you think about her words? Is this right? Does the government do too much to protect corporations? Is her assessment fair? Explain your answers. 4) During the Great Depression the government subsidized the farming of certain produce such as corn to keep farmers in business and keep food prices down for the public. This practice has gone on ever since. Many blame the subsidizing of corn for the prominence of ingredients like high fructose corn syrup in an inordinate amount of food produced in the United States. They also blame it for the fact that many processed foods, which require far more production, are actually much cheaper than fresh produce. Is this an example of the negative effects of government intervention in business affairs? Is this an example of good intentions gone bad? What would someone like Ayn Rand or Milton Friedman say? Explain your answers. 5) Income is the most accurate predictor of obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Should access to healthy food be a right for everyone? Does government subsidizing of the certain crops actually help low-income families by providing them with cheaper, although often less healthy, food, or does it hurt them? Explain your answers. 6) Is the family farm a victim of capitalism, or is it a victim of government intervention? Is this good or bad? Should we have regulations that protect small businesses, or should small businesses do what is necessary to complete? Is there too much government assistance to large corporations to allow them to complete? Should the government avoid helping any kind of business? Explain your answers. 7) Stonyfield Yogurt was bought out by Groupe Danone (Dannon). Was this a positive or negative for Stonyfield? What does this tell you about the nature of the corporation? Are they good for all involved, or are they evil entities preying on the “little guy”? Explain. Should a company have the right to decide what information to give consumers about the food it produces? Would a warning label impact your food choices? For example, would putting a label on a Big Mac container stating, “Consuming foods high in saturated fats may lead to heart disease.” change your mind about eating that Big Mac? What is the role of the government in all of this? Explain your answers. 9) Yogurt company executive Gary Hirshberg states in the film, “The consumer does not feel very powerful, but it’s the exact opposite. When we run an item past the supermarket scanner, we’re voting for local or not, organic or not.” What does he mean by this statement? Do you agree or disagree with it? Explain your answers.
