Computer keeps freezing?

Computer keeps freezing. Virus or computer failure?

  • My computer suddenly freezes whenever I decide to open a browser or open a file. Thing is, my mouse can move so it's not a screen problem. We also get pop ups with messages that have never been seen before, so I'm certain it's a virus of some sort. We have AVG and CCleaner but that's it. We ran the tests and they say nothing is found. We tried to install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware but the browser just freezes and doesn't respond, which ends with us shutting the computer down. Now assuming it's virus, how can we get rid of it? How do we know if it may be due to the fact that our computer is rather poor and it may be dying? We have important business documents on this computer so we need answers ASAP. Thank you.

  • Answer:

Go to a good computer, and download rkill. Transfer rkill to the infected computer via cd/dvd, or usb flash drive. No need to install rkill, just insert cd/dvd, or usb flash, and run it from that. Read the description, not much to read.: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/rkill Download them all, and run each one in turn until one runs successfully. If you can't transfer rkill via means listed above, try booting into safe mode with networking, and then download, and run rkill. After rkill has run successfully, install, and run a full scan with MBAM, it's free: http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4716-malwarebytes-anti-malware.html Then install, and run a full scan with SAS, also free: http://www.superantispyware.com/

Can you copy the documents and anything else you need in the computer to a flash drive or external hard drive? If you can perhaps you can then run System Recovery and take the computer back to out of the box condition and thereby get rid of whatever virus or spyware may be causing the problems. Good Luck.

This could be many different problems, from a cooling issue to hard drive failure. Open up the case, if it looks very dusty, buy some compressed air, hold it UPRIGHT and about 6 inches away (By the way, it's best to do this outside) and clean out all the dust. Absolutly do not use a vacuum, as it can generate static electricity and damage internal components. If that isn't the problem, run a disk check (Start / My Computer / Right Click on C:\ / Find Disk Check, launch it) And also try a memory check, Defragment, Disk Cleanup, and, as a last resort, a clean install of your OS

Well, I will answer assuming its a malware or virus infection. Another user already posted about hardware, and it could be hardware I suppose. Personally, I do not care for AVG as time and time again, I have seen it fail to protect systems. I would advice trying to get a boot cd (say UBCD 4 Windows ( http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Boot-Manager-Disk/UBCD4WIN.shtml ..) from another computer (perhaps a family member or neighbor,...etc etc) and burning a CD to try on your infected system. I would also look at your startup items (go to run in the Start Menu, then type in MSCONFIG and then go to the startup tab) and disable any un-needed items you don't need running at Windows startup. I would advice if you are somehow able to get Malwarebytes, to run it in safe mode. I highly recommend Malwarebytes for this sort of problem (that you are having) If you are able to, I would try another browser, ... it may not do much if it's a problem with the entire computer, but it may be worth a shot. The first advice I can give is like I said ... try to get a boot cd (which typically has Malwarebytes on it) or just Malwarebytes itself from another computer and tranfer it (say via CD or USB drive) to the infected computer. Another program similar to Malwarebytes that may help (though I fully admit it sounds like a "fake scanner") is Super AntiSpyware ( http://www.superantispyware.com/ ) Good Luck, -Xmetalfanx
