How To Use Speedy Catheter?

Is it normal to use a catheter on pregnant women in the ER?

  • I was in a car accident yesterday so today I went to the ER bc i'm pregnant and I wanted to make sure the baby was okay. Well everything was going peachy until they gave me a catheter. No one would tell me why the hell I needed one and I was so pissed and scared that I cried the entire time, and it hurt! And then I was so traumatized that I panicked and started hyperventilating cause I was afraid they were going to do more medically unnecessary things to me. I didn't calm down until the ultrasound tech finally came in and told me they were using it to insert liquid since my bladder needed to be full for the ultrasound, and since it's quicker than just letting me drink a ton of water it's standard practice in an ER. Is that true?? Is this really common practice in the ER?

  • Answer:

I have never heard of that, but things are always changing. When I was prego with my first I got into an accident and had ultrasounds but no catheter. It is absolutely ridiculous that they did not explain to you why it was necessary BEFORE it was inserted.I would find a how are we doing card or phone number and complain. It sounds horrible and this is why nobody trusts medical professionals. They just think they can do whatever they want without asking/explaining things.

Absolutely not...I was in the ER and the lab tech said if I could not urinate she would cath me. I refused and talked to my nurse who said they will not cath pregnant women due to the high risk of passing an infection so the lab tech was mistaken. I have however heard of caths being used to fill bladders for pelvic ultrasounds, just not during a womans pregnancy. Hopefully there was a good reason because it is not common practice. Best wishes!
