How to convince parents?

How to convince my parents to let me get a chihuahua?

  • hi i am a 17 year old girl and i have really wanted a chihuahua for about 6 months now. i have always loved dogs ( i have even volunteered at a rescue organisation for a couple of years) but now i would like a chihuahua of my own. I have done lots and lots of research on them i don't even know if i could find any new information on them now because i know everything about them. i have been on many websites asking how other people would suggest on how to convince there parents to let them get a chihuahua and i am putting together most of the things i have heard, such as be more responsible, do your research, pay for the dog and all its expenses etc. so far i have made a book on chihuahuas, made a 10 000 word essay on why i want one and how to care for it ext, a financial book stating what everything costs ( i have been to the shops and priced all the things which i need ) , the money, a broshure on why i want one and how it will enhance my life and a youtube clip of "the chihuahua dogs 101" episode. i have been working for my dad on weekends and i am slowly getting the money for the puppy, all its accessories, shots, and future vet bills if the puppy does need to go to the vet. i have called my local vet up to ask how much the shots were and how much sterilisation would be. my parents keep on asking me what i am saving up for and i keep telling them nothing yet ( since the puppy isn't born yet ;) ) my parents would freak out if they knew i was saving up for a puppy, they said no more pets after we had gotten our rats. i really want a puppy though because i would like to have someone to sleep with at night, my labrador is too big and he is old so he cant jump up on my bed and my cat doesnt like staying inside at night... and who would want to sleep with rats.. All my friends have small dogs and they always bring them to my house, they are awesome but i want a little dog of my own. I am not planning to study overseas so i dont think it would be a problem in taking my dog with me when im studying because i wouldnt be leaving the house i am living in now. i have thought over any possible reasons why they might not let me get the chihuahua and i have a solution to all of them. Its not like they will have to care for the dog or pay for her expenses i will do anything for the dog needs. I plan to get the dog in the summer holidays which is 6 weeks so that i can start with her training and well socialise her and get her over most of her puppy stage so my parents wont have the puppy responsibility much while i am at school. i am also willing to give up my christmas presents for a chihuahua, i will pay for the chihuahua and everything that the chihuahua needs they wont have to pay out anything for christmas and feel guilty for not getting me a present because they are allowing me to get the dog ( which is much better then getting anything other that is not the chihuahua ) . has anybody else got any other ideas on how i can convince my parents?

  • Answer:

You need to DEMONSTRATE to your parents, not tell them, or whine to them, that you are mature and responsible enough to raise and train a dog. Do you KNOW anything about how to raise and train a dog? Have you EVER read a book about how to raise and train a dog? Do you have any money you can contribute to the purchase and care of the dog? (The average cost of having a dog, once you buy it, is about $1,500 for the first year.)

It doesn't look why theres any reason for them not to give you one as long as you have a job a proper one so you can pay for her on going fee's. Other than that if you really want one I'd buy a flat that allows you to keep pets move in, then you can do whatever...:) And not saying yu will or anything and i'm not saying every chihauhau owner does BUT there are *some* that don't put the dog on the floor because they think someones gonna eat...Nothing will happen to it just socialize it carefully and don't be too protective, thats why most chihauhau's get aggressive. I say this because the other day i took my pug puppy who is 9 months old and my border collie who is 12 to the dog park and my collie does her won thing and wasn't interested in this chihuahua though the owner kept looking at her like she was gonna kill her dog any second and my pug ran up to this chihuahua and circled it wanting to play this other pup came up too to start a game and this chihuahua went crazy and started attacking our dogs so the pups ran off and the women just runs up and scoops this chihuahua up which iss growling and shaking and this women starts screaming saying are dogs are like pitbulls...seriously a pug a pitbull? Crazy anyway just a heads up, I'm sure you won't turn into an over protective chihuahua person ;)

Many things wrong with this. 1 - "All my friends have small dogs and they always bring them to my house, they are awesome" - You never get a dog because your friends have one. Worst reason ever. 2 - "Its not like they will have to care for the dog or pay for her expenses i will do anything for the dog needs." - So this means you have the probable $1,000+ for the dog already? Wow! Amazing! And the possible $100(+/-) to get the dog Neutered and Spayed? Great! The $50(+/-) for high-quality dog food? Sweet! These dogs live a long time, so you have the probable $9,000(+/-) to spend on the dog on their every need? Nice! 3 - "I plan to get the dog in the summer holidays which is 6 weeks so that i can start with her training and well socialize her" - Dogs need consistent training. At least 2 sessions each week, lasting about 10-15 minutes each (more or less) so you and your dog don't get bored. Will you be able to train them twice every week? Hope so. And socialization will take some time as well, especially around larger dogs. Have time to slowly and properly introduce dogs? Hope so! 4 - "i would like to have someone to sleep with at night" - Chihuahuas should NOT be up on beds, especially ones that are high off the ground (which is most). Because if they try to jump down they could break, bruise, sprain, or twist something. 5- " i am also willing to give up my christmas presents for a chihuahua" - Jeez, don't give up everything for your dog. You can still have a life you know... 6 - "how it will enhance my life and a youtube clip of "the chihuahua dogs 101" episode" - The only time I watch 'Dogs 101' is to laugh at all the mistakes they make when talking about a dog breed. They did a segment on Designer Dogs, saying they were dog breeds... 7 - "because i know everything about them" - Don't be so cocky. I've been learning about Yorkshire Terrier's for probably 6-7 years now, and every now and then I'll find something new. 6 months is not enough to get to know every single solitary thing about a dog breed. 8 - "all its accessories" - I do hope you mean things like crates, beds, collars, leashes, bowls, toys and such and not silly little clothes. 9 - "if the puppy does need to go to the vet" - Dogs need to visit the Vet for regular check-ups at least once a year. For a senior dog it's best two go twice. 10 - "who would want to sleep with rats" - The Chihuahua! He'd want to kill them. 11 - "so my parents wont have the puppy responsibility much while i am at school" - The dog will still be a puppy, and so they will still have puppy responsiblity when you leave. When you leave the dog is in *their* hands, not yours. And the icing on the cake: 12 - "they said no more pets after we had gotten our rats" - Oh! So they said no? Sorry. Wait until you move out then. No means no...

research and know facts of breed research and find a breeder that tests dog for health/temperament, google breed club figure out costa and how you will pay for them $5000 emergency vet fund in bank first $1500 first year $300 supplies 12 weeks for small breeds to leave mother 24/7 work to house train dogs are not allowed to go most places with you, unless rich and famous have you talked to trainers, vets and groomers? sit down and discuss with them when they are not busy maybe you should get a stuffed animal until you have finished school and have a job schedule
