Why does iPod take a long time to backup?

Does the Time Machine Backup on your internal hard drive take up a lot of space? If so where is it stored?

  • I have a little amount of space on my hard drive and I was wondering if I were to be able to delete my internal backups since I have an external backup already would it free up more space.

  • Answer:

It takes a heck of a lot of space. Firstly, there's a second copy of everything already on the drive, effectively halving it's capacity. Then there's every copy of every changed file ever. That adds up to a *lot* of useless data. While I applaud your initiative to make backups, making them on the same disk as the data to back up is just, simply put, dumb. The point of backups is to have a copy of your data in case your drive dies: having your backups on a dead drive isn't too useful. Your backups should be at the root (the top level) of your hard drive, in a folder called "Backups.backupdb". Delete that (remember to empty the trash!) and you'll instantly regain several dozen to several hundred gigabytes.

You should never be storing backups on your primary hard drive; this defeats the purpose of a backup. What you should do is make sure that Time Machine is configured to store backups on your external drive. Under System Preferences, open Time Machine and click the "Select Disk..." button to instruct Time Machine to use your external drive for backups. I also recommend checking the "Show Time Machine status in menu bar" option so I can see when it's backing up and get quick access to the settings. I prefer using Time Machine to whatever backup software came with my external drive(s) because it works so well with the Mac OS X. When I had a hard drive fail, restoring my computer was actually super easy using Time Machine.

It depends on if the flux capacitor is charged to 1.21 jiggawatts!
