How do I connect my older video camera to my computer?

Does anyone know how to connect a Canon video camera to a computer?

  • I have to do a school project with a video camera and upload it to a Wiki. The camera came with a Firewire cable but I have no spot on my laptop to plug it in. There doesn't seem to be a spot on the camera where I can plug in a USB cable either. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can get the video from the camera to the computer?

  • Answer:

Either get hold hold of a firewire card for your PC or find a PC that's already got one. Firewire to USB converters don't work!

What you need to a IEEE1394 port into your computer is a card that will fit in your laptop's expansion port, such as this - http://ca.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/FireWire/2-Port-IEEE-1394-FireWire-CardBus-Adapter-with-Digital-Video-Editing-Kit~CB1394_2. It would be very good Idea if you went out and got an external hard drive also, as videos take huge amounts of hard drive space, something which few laptops have.

You have to use a fireware extension slot card that will allow you to connect the camera to your PC.
