I cant play videos from my JVC Video Camera on my computer?

I have a JVC video camera hd. i connected it to my compaq laptop and uploaded the videos onto my computer but it wont let me play it. if downloading the videos on my laptop would work how do i download them onto my laptop. How can i make it work. I need to make it work because i videotaped some stuff for my project an i really need it to work. Thanks :)
