MS-DOS for Kids that Run in Windows 7?

  • My 8yo was asking about computer mice, and eventually the conversation led to what we did before we had mice, and so to character mode and MS-DOS. I showed him a command prompt console window, and demonstated a dir command, and tried to explain what it was like to use DOS. But even though I used MS-DOS for years before Windows, his curiosity went beyond my ability to explain. My old dos programs are long gone, and anyway I doubt they would run on Windows 7. Are there any free, simple MS-DOS apps around that would let him get an idea of what it was like to use a DOS app? Simple games would be good, but in addition it would be great if I could show him some kind of simple productivity app or utility. Thanks for any suggestions.

    You can install DOSBox for free, it will run the old DOS programs. http://www.dosbox.com/ You can get a bunch of free games here: http://www.myabandonware.com/ See the FAQ, they mention another DOS emulator, D-fend Reloaded, but I'm not familiar with that one. Don't know about any old productivity apps like spreadsheets, word processors, etc, buut a search migh turn something up

NONE of the old MSDOS software will work on current systems as the Microsoft NT system takes total control of the hardware which DOS used to connect to directly. Also there are no DOS drivers for current hardware so it is not possible to load dos on a current machine as it would originally from disk. And the disk sizes are far too big for dos to recognise. So other than finding a very old machine to mess with, you may need to stick to using the command window.
