A forensic scientist uses scientific disciplines like analytical chemistry to examine crime scenes and evidence. A lab technician basically. Like the characters played in the TV shows "CSI" and "NCIS" (Abby the lab goth). A forensic pathologist performs autopsies and other medical tests on dead bodies and their ilk to aid in the solving of crimes. Only Matt's answer gave the correct information. A forensic pathologist is a licensed physician who went to medical school following four years of college, then did an internship and then a full residency as a physician in a pathology program. The oathology residency program alone takes four more years. There are 149 pathology residency programs currently in the US, and some pathologists elect to do a fellowship of a couple of years afterward in subspecialties such as: Cytopathology Dermatopathology Hematopathology Medical Microbiology Molecular Genetic Pathology Neuropathology Pathology Informatics Subspecialty Surgical Pathology Transfusion Medicine A forensic scientist is a person who does laboratory and forensic determinations in the course of their work. Most of them have a minimum of a Bachelors degree and many of them have a Master's degree. A forensic scientist's role is decidedly less varied than is portrayed on current television programs.

A forensic scientist is more of a general term given to anyone who works in forensics. Forensics is applying a broad range of sciences to find an answer. This could be in relation to anything from crime (Criminalistics) or civil court. A forensic pathologist determines the cause of death of a person by examining the corpse. (so a forensic pathologist is also a forensic scientist)
