How can I get rid of my Y!Profile?

Is it possible/how can I get rid of Asthma?

  • Alright, so I was born with Asthma, and allergies, I'm allergic to 19 of 20 common allergens, (don't have complete list) but I am getting allergy shots now, not sure how much they are helping. The main question I am asking is, how can I get rid of my asthma, I am 16 years old, and my whole future relied on me joining the Marines. But, no branch of the U.S. military accepts someone with Asthma. I am in good shape, I work out, run, bike. But I can't get rid of my asthma. I have to use my inhaler usually at least once a day, I clearly cannot get into the marines with that. Is there anyway to get rid of it within another 2-3 years, I take singulair right now, and it keeps me alive, will stopping that force my body to cope and get rid of it? Pretty much my only thought now. And if not, how can I get rid of it?

  • Answer:

I have seen children grow out of asthma but at your age that is not going to happen. Plan for a different future, I know it is hard to believe right now but there is a whole world of opportunity for someone like you.

It hasn't been proven that you can get rid of Asthma, but there are medications that you can take to help prevent most of your asthma symptoms.

I'm not a doctor but I don't think you can get rid of asthma

A lot of young people experience a remission of sorts about this time in their life and it resurfaces around age 30 or so again. But this does not happen with everyone. Sometimes it goes away completely, sometimes you have it everyday of your life, and unfortunately, sometimes it can lead to the unthinkable (death). I would have a long talk with your doctor. The most important thing is to manage your asthma. Watch your weight, and do keep exercising, but never in isolation please as it seems as if you have exercise-induced asthma on top of the allergies triggering the wheezing, inflammation, and increased mucous production. I encourage you to learn about all these aspects of asthma and why we use steroids, anti-inflammatory, and bronchial muscle relaxants to help control it, as well as a host of other drugs like Singulair. Please do not stop your Singulair except if your doctor tells you to. It has a decent track record of safety and efficacy. It's the steroids that you have to watch like a hawk. As to the service, I would look into it...they may not take an asthmatic, but have a plan B, like everyone should. You could work as a civilian for the military, for instance. Don't let your disease define you. You define it. I have had asthma for my 50 years as does my 18 year old. I am an RN with tons of experience teaching about asthma. Decades ago we would have been bed ridden as children. Now we have so many more tools and resources. My primary focus has always been to treat the allergies with an iron fist. Don't bother to cover mattresses because that is a joke, but do consider ridding your home of rugs and stuffed animals. Bath your animals with a good anti-allergy pet shampoo. Wear a mask when you mow the lawn. And find a terrific career and/or hobby that involves excitement and action, like the military would offer. I would suggest coaching sports. Good luck my friend.
