How do I make love handles go away?

Will this make my love handles go away?

  • I'm 16.. so I can do this more easily as opposed to if I was 40.. (more easily? is that right?) Anyways.. I'm fairly thin to begin with.. I'm 5'2" and somewhere around 115 lbs... but, some of that is muscle cause I've been working out for a few weeks and I do see my abs coming in and stuff. So I'm not paying attention to the weight, I'm more about the measurements. And don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be an unhealthy stick, I want to be fit and healthy and look good. I know it's impossible to spot reduce... so I'm wondering with the current things I'm doing, will my love handles slowly melt away as well? I walk briskly on the treadmill for 10 minutes and then I jog for 10.. I'm working my way up to jogging for 30 minutes. 75 deep squats 30 reverse crunches 50 bicycle crunches 50 leg lifts (on each side).. like the kind where you lie on your side. I'm also going to be adding more things in and swapping some things out to prevent a plateau.. But with this stuff, will my love handles go away? And will my stomach get flat? I've only been at this for 3 weeks.. For the first week I did it every day but I know that was really bad so I cut down to 4 times a week. I do notice that my top ab muscles are more there than they were before.. But I'll be seeing more results right? I'm a vegetarian and I have been for 8 years so I don't have to worry about things like bacon and whatnot. I've been trying to cut way back on sugar... And for breakfast I have a home made strawberry banana smoothie made with lowfat yogurt, whey protein powder, and just a little bit of sugar because the strawberries can be really bitter sometimes. I eat a salad just about every night. I limit myself to one soda on weekends if I simply MUST have one. Last week I was on my period so I did slip up and have a good amount of chocolate.. but that won't happen again. SO with all of this will my love handles go away? I mean, I've only been doing this all for 3 weeks... so I'm not going to be seeing results now.. but will this get me fit in a few months?

  • Answer:

As you said you can't spot reduce...the body burns fat on a first on last off basis (thus "problem" areas)...so whatever your problem area is (for me it's lower back fat) that will be the last thing to burn off...it may require extremely strict dieting and vigorous exercise (cardio and strength training) 5 or 6 days a week...it just depends on your body and your goals...just keep it up and make sure your exercise routines are very taxing and done with a high intensity...also I suggest you start running and lifting.

For working out: Weight lifting -- high weight, low reps. You want to be lifting enough weight so that you can do only 10-12 reps of each exercise. 2-3 times/wk, High intensity interval training -- beats moderate level aerobics, hands down. 2-3 times/wk. Some kind of stretching type exercise, like yoga, to improve your balance and flexibility and protect your joints and muscles from injury. Best diet: Follow a real food diet ... no processed foods.

Follow a pro-designed program, like New Rules of Lifting for Women. Reduce your carb intake (sugar, fruit, grain, wheat), increase protein (dairy, fish, eggs). Track your meals on Fitday, Sparkpeople, etc. Every time you find yourself doing more than 2 minutes of ab exercises, google "spot reduction myth".
