What is musical theater dance?

Musical theater vs. modern dance?

  • I'm moving to a new dance studio next fall. I have a summer to decide, but I wanna decide soon. I'm already doing hip hop, ballet & jazz. I'm not sure if I should do musical theater or modern dance? Or should I take the money and take a gymnastics class to help me with hip hop instead ? Thanks :D

    Modern if it is a real modern of Graham, Horton, Limon etc. and not just a generic modern will give you stronger over all dance technique. Otherwise if it is a generic modern then either will do. Gymnastics will mess with your alignment for ballet. If you just want to take it to be flexible, do pilates or yoga instead.

I personally prefer musical theatre over modern/contemporary dance classes, simply because I like playing the role in musical theatre numbers. However, if modern is something you enjoy, go for it! If you're really in to hip hop and gymnastics courses would benefit you, then that might be a better idea if you aren't interested in modern or musical theatre. I've been dancing for 14 years, I've done a bit of everything but I mainly prefer ballet, musical theatre and jazz and occasionally tap.
