Answer:
Most private scholarships can be used at any college, so go ahead and apply for lots of them. You are smart to be thinking about this now. Many students leave it until the last minute, and then their chances of winning are not as good. To prepare for scholarship hunting you should do the following: 1) Keep your grades up. You don't have to have all A's but you should aim for something in the high B range. 2) Think about what field you might want to study in college and start to narrow your goals. Clearly articulated goals are one of the most important pieces of a scholarship application. 3) Plan to take some advanced courses, particularly in the field you want to study. 4) Participate in 2-3 extra curricular activities, preferably ones that are connected to your goals. For example, if you like science, join the robotics. If you're thinking about a career in the theater, join the drama club, etc. A few activities that you are very active in is better than a lot of activities that you don't do much with. 5) Do some community service, and take on leadership roles whenever you can. Again, if you can find something that is connected to your goals, it helps show a scholarship committee that you are a good investment. 6) Ask your parents to join organizations in the community. Many have scholarships that are available to members, but you have to have been member for a couple of years, so now's the time to join. 7) Read a couple of books on scholarship hunting and college financing. There are strategies for winning that really help, and some of these books have very good advice. A couple of good ones are "How to Go to College Almost for Free" by Ben Kaplan, "Pay for College Without Sacrificing Your Retirement" by Tim Higgins, and "Debt Free U" by Zac Bissonette. The biggest way to save on college is to pick the right one. If you do it right, you won't need a lot of scholarships, so study up on that, too. Hope that helps. Good Luck!
