What is the use of having a checking account if you already have a savings account?
-
A checking account has a lower interest rate. Is the sole purpose of a checking account in this case is to allow a larger number of monthly transcations? But if you don't deposit all your cash to your savings account and leave some pocket-money instead, that defeats the purpose of a checking account, right? I just don't understand why someone should set a checking account if s/he has a savings account

Answer:
In the olden days, like before internet banking, people managed their bank accounts differently. You wrote checks more often, and you had to make sure you had enough money in your chequing account to cover your bills. You might have used a savings account to sock money away. Today, my opinion is that banks still offer "chequing" and "savings" accounts for historical reasons, and not because they reflect the way people bank today. So I think you are asking a valid question and are right to feel a bit confused. My suggestion is to figure out what you want to do with your bank account, and how and where you want to save money, and then shop for the lowest-fee account available.

It is just for writing checks. Often people will have their pay deposited in their checking account and then transfers to various savings accounts for their various budgetary goals. Having multiple accounts can be useful simply for budgeting purposes. Some people use pre-paid credit card accounts for the same purpose and such accounts are simply bank accounts that are exempt from various consumer protection legislation.

People have checking accounts to write checks on, and even to do online bill paying. While you may be able to online bill paying thru savings, if you do too many of these, you will be charged. That doesn't happen with a checking account.
