Persuasive Speech Topic?

What would be a good introduction to this persuasive speech topic?

  • Ok so I am having a persuasive presentation next wk and I can't think of a good introduction to start off the speech. The topic I chose is watching tv should be reduced to the minimum. I am persuading my audience to watch less television. So does anyone have a good introduction to this topic? Like say you are doing a speech on this topic. What would your introduction be? I am looking for some ideas and I need to use one of the methods to get attention and interest to the audience(such as Relate topic to the audience, state the importance of your topic, startle the audience, arouse the curiosity of the audience, question the audience, begin with a quotation, tell a story) I also need to establish credibility and I am having trouble with the intro. So if anyone can help me out I would appreciate it. Thanks

  • Answer:

This is what my college taught me to begin with, Ladies and Gentlemen, I am here today to convince you that the hours you spend watching the television should be reduced in favour of something more constructive. Then you present your evidence and finish with a tidy conclusion. But if you want to gain the crowd interest. Get the audience involved.... Fellow students, can I have your attention please. How many of you in this room believe you spend too much time watching television, raise your hands. Then once they raise there hands, look toward the crowd and say... don't you think that time spent could be better used. Or another option is move to the front of the room and say in a loud voice, like a television presenter; NEWSFLASH! Students viewing time at all time high.... You are watching _____ (make up a name like a tv show) and I am (_____ your name) Stay tuned as we expose exactly how much time students waste in front of the televison. Add all you evidence and facts. Then finish with: That's some interesting stuff and we're out of time, this is (________ your name) signing off. Hope I helped out and goodluck with your presentation...

I just did a speech like this 2 months ago. You should probably start off with a fact. For instance, you could say "Did you know that ____ people watch ____ hours of television each day?"
