Why is a bouncy ball so bouncy?

A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. Why is the ball only $0.05?

  • I don't get this supposedly basic math problem. I've read the answer and "explanation", and I STILL don't get it. Can anyone help me figure it out? Here is the problem and how people claim it should be resolved: A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost? "x + y = 1.10 x = bat y = ball Bat costs $1 more than the ball, so x = y + 1 2y + 1 = 1.10 2y = 0.10 y = 0.05 x = 1 + 0.05 = 1.05 $" -------------------------------- But I still don't get it. Where did the 2y come from? Why is there suddenly two balls to make $1.10?

  • Answer:

Look, x=y+1 .........(equation 1) and x+y=1.10 .........(equation 2) AND NOW substituting the value of x from equation 1 in equation 2, we get, y+1+y=1.10 and which is nothing but 2y+1=1.10. GOT IT? Are Americans so poor in math?

I don't really get the algebra bit, im crap at math, but.... MAYBEEE.... The Bat costs 1.05...and the ball costs 0.5...... that makes sence? So added together... it would be 1.10????!??! I didn't help much did I, :/
