DJ Equipment for a beginner?

Beginner DJ equipment?

  • Ive been involved in the music industry for quite some time but I never felt certain about what I eventually wanted to do. Now I realise Id lile to be a party / club DJ. I need some equipment to start me off and in an ideal world id have some nice timecoded turntables and a good quality mixer. Money is the problem. Ive been looking at the Pioneer DDJ-Ergo and the Traktor S2, but personally I feel they look like toys and I wouldnt get taken seriously. So what are some good affordable CDJs / Turntabled and mixer for a beginner setup? Thank you.

  • Answer:

We run a disco every week. I used to use turntables and a mixer, but now I just use a laptop. You can use special programs if you want, but people are only interested in what music you play. You'll also need a decent microphone. I've just changed to cordless. Start with a pair even if you only need one. Less equipment to carry, and get them in a case. Lights - don't consider anything that's not LED. You need to be reliable. The Pod lights are good and cheap, but make sure they are the bright ones. We also keep buying the big spot lights, the multifunction are best, but again get protective cases. You'll need a good amp & speakers. We use a 200 watt, but depends on room size. Your best bet is a package so that they match them up. We don't use speaker stands. I can't tell any difference, its just more money and more to transport.
