What should I do about stretch marks?

What did you use to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy?

  • I know most will say stretch marks are determined by your genes, however, I've always heard of women who swear by certain creams or oils throughout their pregnancies and developed little to no stretch marks, despite others in their family having them much worse than what they do. I am almost in the second trimester and have been using Palmer's Cocoa Butter Moisturizing Body Oil and the tub butter formula. Though I have only gained three to four lbs and have no stretch marks from the pregnancy, I am curious to know what other women's experiences are with certain stretch mark prevention products. What did you use? At what point did you start to use it in your pregnancy? To what degree of stretch marks did you develop, if any? What else would you recommend to women wanting to prevent stretch marks?

  • Answer:

I thought I would get them because my moms stomach was a road map .. however she also gained something like 80lbs with each pregnancy. I ate really healthy food throughout my pregnancy and gained weight slowly (27lbs by the end) and I also used a cream from Thyme Maternity, however I feel that the slow weight gain was really what helped me avoid stretch marks. So long as your body has time to adjust to the weight gain, you should make it out fairly unmarked. I started using it when I was about 6 months pregnant (when I started showing) and I got one small stretch mark fairly low on my belly just before I went into labor. I stopped using the cream 2 weeks before I gave birth thinking it wouldn't do anything for me so it may or may not be a coincidence that I got one at that time.

I did get stretch marks, however I got all of mine on my butt, lol. I used Palmers Tummy Butter my whole pregnancy. I think I applied it 3 times a day and I didn't get any stretch marks on my stomach (I also was tiny when I got pregnant, 93lbs and 137lbs at birth) I didn't put it on my butt, but now I wish I would have. I loved that stuff, the tummy butter, not the lotion. Not saying that was what kept me from getting stretch marks, but I'd use it again for sure.

drink warm water n only warm water for straight six months plus apply anti stretch marks cream or lotion before bedtime every day. It will be more effective.

Cocoa butter doesn't help stretch marks, it only helps the itchiness. I would recommend Bio-oil. It works pretty well.I am 31 weeks and I have a few stretch marks but they are coming in very slowly, and not deep at all. You put it on morning and night. It is very good for your skin and scars as well. You might still get some stretch marks, but not as bad as you would if you used something else. You will want to continue to use bio oil after the pregnancy as well, because any stretch marks you did get during your pregnant, will go away if you continue to use bio oil. I love the stuff. It's kind of pricy, 20 bucks for a 4.3ounce, but so worth it. It says to continue to use for at least 3 months.

The women who say the creams and oils worked are the ones who probably wouldn't have developed the bad stretch marks anyway due to "good genes". Topical creams and lotions can only penetrate the top couple layers of skin (epidermis) ... but the real bad stretch marks you see originate in the top layers of the dermis where the creams and oils can't penetrate. I would not spend a ton of money on these creams and oils. But I know my skin down around my belly is so dry so it doesn't hurt to use a cheaper brand just to stay moisturized and if it happens to help, great.
