How long does it take to get a US work permit?

  • My husband and I are Australians and we are planning to move to either Canada or the US next year. With regards to the US...my husband has spoken to a few companies and he is elligble to get the E3 visa. I plan to come in as his spouse (same visa). I know that as his spouse I am able to work in the US (for as long as he has a contract) but that first I have to apply for a work permit which I can only do once I arrive in the US. My question is - how long does it take for this to be processed? I heard 3 months which worries me as this is a long time to wait until I am able to start working. Coming in as a spouse on the same type of visa in Canada I'm actually able to get the work permit before I leave Australia which is good. Thank you. Thank you.

    yes the spouse can work on an E--3 ..the EAD takes around 90 days http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-3_visa
