How should I ask a company for sponsorship?

Please help! Master of Microbiology - greencard/visa sponsorship?

  • Hi, im from Australia and am going to do a Bachelor of Science with a major in Microbiology and then after that, a Master of Microbiology. What i want to ask is: if i have a Master of Microbiolog, do I have a good chance of getting a green card/visa through job sponsorship by a company/employer in Los Angeles? I plan to live in Los Angeles when i'm older so thats why i'm asking. Is it likely that I would get sponsored by someone if I have this education? And also, what type of companies/facilities/workplaces would I be likely to find a job in with a Master of Microbiology in LA? Thanks so much for your help :)

  • Answer:

A chance yes, is it going to be easy: no. With a masters an employer can sponsor you for a work visa (H1B). This is not uncommon, particularly at universities. It is up to you to find an employer. Whether this work visa leads to a greencard eventually is another question. It's expensive for an employer to sponsor somebody for a greencard. Some companies don't do it at all, some more or less reluctantly. I don't really know what there is in LA that you can't really have in e.g. Sydney or Melbourne. The beaches are better in Australia...

It's almost impossible to get sponsored but that is a good area where you might have a chance. You are more likely to find a job in San Francisco, San Diego or the north east.

After you have your M.S. and 5 years experience in your field, an employer can sponsor your for an H1-B visa. Who knows, in 2020 there maybe enough demand for foreign employees again. The H1-B will give you 3 years of legal presence in the U.S., and it's not uncommon to get another 3-year extension without problems. Thereafter you will have to go home unless the employer sponsors you for a Green Card. Why would an employer do that? Because they don't want to lose you after 6 years of loyal service. Although . . . once you have your Green Card, you can switch employers. For that reason, they may tie you in with a work contract. Also, when you are in the U.S. and meet the love of your life, you can get married and afterward file for Adjustment of Status. That also would get you a Green Card.
