  • Answer:

Copyright is free and automatically exists from the moment of the work is created until many decades after your death. Copyrights can be registered with the copyright office in your country for a small fee, but it is not necessary to register your copyright for copyright to exist. However, this required that the work in question is actually CREATED. You cannot copyright an idea (you also cant copyright titles). I honestly dont think you have anything to worry about though, those who actually have the ability to produce a work would no doubt have their own idea's, so they aren't going to bother stealing yours.

I used to write poetry and looked into this once. There is supposedly a "Poorman's Copywrite". Make copies of all of your work. Put the originals in a package and mail them to yourself. Keep the package in tact and unopened as it comes in the mail. Put the package in a safe place (safe deposit box, ect). If your work ever gets stolen you have the originals sealed in the package with the postage date. This supposedly will stand in a court of law. Research "Poorman's Copywrite" before souly relying on it though.

If you plan to continue in creative efforts, you should really read and understand copyright law. http://www.copyright.gov It's not that difficult, an well worth your time.

Disclosing the story and plot has essentially released them for the world to use. Copyright is "free and automatic" in most countries, but does not cover the "idea or concept" in the story. Registering copyright is impossible (and unnecessary) in most countries. "Poor man's copyright" is pointless and stupid -- how do you prove what was inside the envelope when you mailed it? How do you prove the envelope didn't get mailed unsealed and then later have things put into it? If you HAVE the proof of when you created something, there is certainly no reason to "mail" it anywhere. Also, for the record, copyright registration is not "proof" of ownership -- only "evidence" of your claim of ownership. The copyright office has no way of knowing where your copy came from or who created it or when, unless it happens to match something they already have.
