Where to find free online courses?

Where is the best place to find courses for 3D/Games design not online though in London?

  • Can anyone recommend courses that focus upon 3D design (modelling etc.) or game design thats isnt online? i'm in the last year of a 3D course but it wasn't the great... more conceptual than technical. any help would be apreciated :)

  • Answer:

I did some stereoscopic 3D training with a 3D Production Agency called Inition They also do 3d modeling and other training. Why don't you get in touch and ask them if they have anything you are interested in? http://www.inition.co.uk/3d-training-and-consultancy Good Luck on your search!

There are loads of courses that offer games design either as the whole course, or as part of another course, but BE AWARE that not all of them are good; Game Design is fast becoming the next new hip thing to have to encourage new students to come to whatever university, and is sometimes considered gimmicky. That said, in London there are a couple games courses that seem decent enough. University of the Arts London (London College of Communication) have a course I believe, but in my experience it is less practical and more conceptual, meaning a lot is self taught and isn't a good simulation of the industry. From what I remember though, if you're going to go for a long-term course, you'd be wasting your time looking for one in London, and don't look at courses that only offer 3D games design as a module, because it's likely that they won't bother hiring experienced professors, and it's just there to expand horizons. There are four main games design courses in the UK which are hailed as being the best. These are Abertay Dundee (Scotland), Glamorgan (Wales), De Montfort (Leicester) and Southampton Solent (Southampton). The first three are SkillSet accredited, meaning that they have been formally recognised by the government as extraordinarily good courses for games design and with a good employment rate, and the last one is in the process of being accredited if they can improve some of the facilities. I'm studying at Solent, and the teaching is absolutely fantastic; it's all geared towards getting you a job, and they aim to get you into the industry by the end of year 2. It's all practical apart from a short dissertation, and the tutors really push you to improve. I would strongly recommend you look to study outside of London, if you can afford it.
