How can I eat when I am disgusted by food?

How can I get my dog to eat?

  • I have a 2yr old male GSD who is an EXTREMELY finicky eater. He has no health problems, but his picky eating has led him to lose quite a bit of weight. He weighs roughly 65lbs. He has a very slender, feminine build, but it's still pretty obvious that he's underweight. He was on a high-protein high quality dry food, but he lost interest in it. Tried giving him puppy food (high fat) and he just turned his nose up at it. Tried feeding him canned, and he liked it for awhile, then started refusing it. I've tried mixing in cheese, eggs, peanut butter etc. He licks it, and then spits it out with this disgusted look on his face. Started feeding him raw steak, chicken, and pork. He ate that for awhile then got bored. The only thing I've been able to get him eat consistantly is cooked white rice with cooked ground beef mixed in. I know that isn't very nutritional, but it's all I can get him to consume. Other than being boney, he has a good thick coat, is very active and lively. His weight just worries me so much. If anyone out there has suggestions on what I can do to make him pack on some pounds, I would love to hear it.

  • Answer:

Take him to the vet so the vet can run some tests. There may be an underlying medical problem, as it's very abnormal for dogs to starve themselves. If he wasn't losing weight, I'd suggest someone is feeding him, he gets food from the trash, etc. But that doesn't appear to be the case. It may be that he has cavities or other oral problems, so have a thorough oral exam done as well. Edit. Maybe he has more teeth bothering him now. Get him checked.

Dogs have to work for their food. If you're feeding him without him working for it thensonetimes dogs will loose intrist. Its like you getting whatever you want all the time without working for it. Sounds nice at first but after a while you get bored and dont want it anymore. When you wake up, before you or he has had breakfast, go on a nice walk. 15 minutes at the least. Then make him sit and wait patiently for his food. After he is waiting patiently, give him his food. Remember dogs decended from wolves, though they arent wolves anymore, they are still programed to work for their food. Wolves sometimes go weeks without a successful hunt. Hunts can last up to 10 hours at a time. Treat your dog like the animal he is and you'll see the differance in him. Go to www.dogbreedinfo.com to find out more. Also if this doesnt work than you should see a vet.
