Any way to separate my dvd player's surround sound system?
-
Well here's the problem. I have a panasonic dvd player that had 5.1 surround sound combo so all the speakers connect directly to the dvd player using those weird cables. I recently bought a new blu ray player, but no surround sound since the system can only connect to the dvd player since it was a combo. My question is, is there any way that I could buy some converter or receiver or something that can make the dvd player and the 5.1 system separate units?

Answer:
Buying as separate units is the only correct way to buy audio equipment. All in one systems are all pretty much garbage. The Panasonic system goes to the dump. The new blu-ray player is hopefully just a stand alone player. For that you need an AVR (Audio Video Receiver). Once you have the AVR you need speakers, left/center/right plus rear surround if you want surround. You also need a powered subwoofer. Never put together a system with all components from the same manufacturer, that's the worst thing you can do. I know this is contrary to the average person's thinking but the problem is that manufacturers that make good electronics tend to make horrible speakers and vice versa. Get the AVR from Pioneer, Onkyo, Denon or any similar company. Get the speakers from a company specializing in speakers and ideally get the subwoofer from a company specializing in subwoofers. How much you want to spend will have a lot to do with which brands you will be considering. Good systems are not put together on a few hundred dollars budget, it unfortunately takes real money to get real sound quality. mk

There is no converter that you can purchase to connect you blu ray disc player to the system. Check your system and see if it has an optical audio input, if it has then you can connect an optical audio cable from the tv to the system. Then you connect the blu ray dsc player directly to the tv. This will provide you sound through your system. Keep in mind that those home theater in a box are not flexible for adding anything to them or for upgrading. They are mainly designed for you to watch a dvd or blu ray disc movie with surround sound. This is a common issue with consumers who purchase a home theater in a box. Hope this will help you out.

Connect optical cable from Blu-ray player to sound system for audio if your sound system has one Optical Digital input.

You can buy an AV receiver which will have the 5.1 decoding circuitry in it, and feed the digital audio output signal of the Blu-Ray player into it to be decoded into discrete channels and fed out to speakers. The Blu-Ray player will also play DVDs, so you won't need the combo unit any more to play DVDs. It is very possible that the speakers from the old Panasonic combo will not be suitable for use with your new receiver, and you will also have to buy new speakers. Here's why... Speaker systems can be passive (fed at amplified speaker output level) or active aka "powered" (fed at line level and amplified inside the speaker cabinet). In an AV receiver-based ("component") system, usually all the speakers are passive except the subwoofer. A powered subwoofer for a component system will have its own AC power supply. In combo systems, not only can it be any way the manufacturer wants to make it with regard to which speakers are passive and which are active, because it was designed to be a closed system -- they can also choose to supply DC power to the amplifier(s) in any active speaker(s) from a power supply inside the combo main unit, over any connectors they want (such as over those "weird cables"). Again, because it was designed as a closed system. So, even if the speakers are the same regarding passive/active (an active subwoofer), that subwoofer may not work with the new receiver because it is dependent on the combo main unit to supply a DC voltage on its "weird cable" to power the amplifier inside it! New component speakers will probably be better quality than the combo speakers anyway. But it will cost you some money.
