How to clone a harddrive (HDD)?
-
so I want to clone my HDD where my OS is on, on to my SSD for my laptop, I have read that if I want to clone my HDD through windows 7 by creating the system repair disk and system image I can not do it as my SSD is smaller then my HDD (HDD=1TB AND SSD=120GB). So instead of using third party software to do this, can I take out my HDD of my laptop where my OS is and connect it internally or externally to my desktop (not booting from it), and then connect my SSD to my desktop through USB and then copy the files over, then format the laptop HDD and then insert them both into my laptop again. And of course setting the SSD as the primary boot? I don't want to use the windows CD because I will then have to get all the driers installed and some software. all together I only ave about 30GB use up on the 1TB Also does anyone know any good third party software just in case what I want to do doesn't work? I have the brand new alienware m17x r4. thanks for any help provided.

Hi.. With out 3rd party software the problem with your suggestions are.... You can't copy all the required boot files just by selecting copy... And to compound the problem you can only have one C drive , D drive , E drive etc etc..... The moment you connect the drive to an already booted computer the allocated drive letter will change makes the drive useless to boot from... I have used different clone software and found a free application that you burn as a boot disc to be the best for my needs .... My recovery partition failed to work on new hard drives cloned with other applications .... EaseUS Disk Copy ......Free for home use.. http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/home-edition/
http://www.xxclone.com/index.htm That'll do what you want to do Be warned, that you won't have optimal preformance if you copy windows 7 from a HDD to an SSD. Your best bet would be to reinstall windows on the ssd

Hello Cloner, I have done this many times before, true image by acronis, it really works well, you can clone hard drive to BIG FILE and restore to bare metal drive, just remove partition of your laptop drive or drive to be cloned to before task. or Clone Disk, from C to X for example... it will force reboot because you are trying to clone using os that needs to be clones.. and before windows comes back you get a black screen with %, just go eat a sandwich, press any key to shut down...remove old master... and turn on, to verify it works. Hope it helps,
