Good inexpensive laptop for Windows? (700 or less?

Is an Alienware laptop worth it?

  • I asked this question yesterday but I've got most of the details together. Here's what he sent me: " I'll sell it to you for 700 and I paid 2K for it. It's a 15x and It has an i5 processor with 1.3ghz and a turbo boost to 2.6 ghz. The graphics is a readon and it has I believe a 1.5 gig memory in the graphics. 500 gig hard drive. 6 gig ram. 1080 glass HD screen. I'll throw in all the original stuff as well the packaging and I'll reformat the computer as well. If you want you can look at it and even play BF3 on it". He told me it has an ATI readon 5730 HD in it and I don't really know if that's terrible, OK or good. It comes with an alienware backpack, mouse, orginal boxing, and all the orginal software including windows 7. I know there is way better options out there such as a better Alienware or a nice ASUS. I'd perfer a desktop but due to college I need a laptop. So for $700 or less, is this a good buy? I'd like to upgrade the processor myself to a better I5 or an I7 and maybe the graphics card if I can. Can anyone show me a laptop that would be a better buy inside of my price range of $800? that or one that is no higher than 1000 that is worth saving up for?

  • Answer:

Your mainly paying for the name. It would be better to get a Dell XPS. IMO

That alienware can run Bf3 at medium settings with a little lagging,, the specs seems to be good for some gaming , there are a lot of choices besides alienware , sagernotebooks , maingear, asus, hp and dell check at there website and the specs the best processor is a i7-2600qm and graphic card amd hd 6870m or higher or a nvidia gtx 560 or higher good fro gaming and multi-tasking

I strongly dislike Alien Ware Laptops, there known to break down or need repair a lot faster than your nrmal gaming laptop. AlienWare is just an overhyped company... All bias aside....$700 is a decent deal, but I do agree, upgrade that dam i5 to an i7 Lol! See if you can talk him down to $650, that would be a pretty good deal in my opinion... BUT, how old is the laptop he's selling you...if it's more than 2 years old, I wouldnt do it... I also agree with John, I own an XPS Laptop. It's well worth the money spent.

Will simplify Go to Lenovo.COM and compare Ideapad Y570 on sale. 10% 1st order discount for email signup Price delivered is about the same Graphics: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php HD 5730 VS GT 555M 2GB > Lenovo 30% stronger Dual core i5-540M VS Quad Core i7-2670QM is almost 3 times stronger CPU http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php 8GB RAM Many other features. Dell Alienware has pretty LED Keyboard backlighting and a 1080p screen that slows down an already slower graphics chip. Y570 is only 720p (x768) but then runs games faster. No warranty on the used system. The Alienware is worth maybe $600 or so. Adding: That 2 year old Alienware on Battlefield-3 should run on low, but medium with the 1080p screen should only be about 20fps too much lag. A GT 555M should barely run BF3 on medium.

>He told me it has an ATI readon 5730 HD in it and I don't really know if that's terrible, OK or good. That's... outdated. We are already on the Radeon 7000 series, so that HD5730 is already two generations behind. I wouldn't pay $700 for that. For $800 dollars and upwards, you can buy a laptop that has better specifications (bar the 1080p screen since 1080p laptop displays are very expensive -- expect to pay over $1200 for a full HD laptop) If you look on Amazon, you should be able to find ASUS ROG, Toshiba Qosmio or similar Dell XPS 15 series which come equipped with the latest Radeon GPU's and Core i7 processors. Unlike desktops, laptops cannot be upgraded to the same extend as desktops -- a laptop's processor and graphics card is usually non-user replaceable and the HDD, RAM are just about the only things you can remove from it.

If you stuck to his word with "700 and I paid 2K", ask him why such a price drop? He obviously wants to get rid of it ASAP if this was the case. It also depends on when he bought it at 2k as well. Seems like an ok deal. Make sure it doesn't have any overheating issues since alienware usually runs with stronger hardware.
