How to calculate max/min scales on a scatter plot?

Anybody know how to have Excel scatter plot data points display labels pulled from a third series?

  • I work in higher education enrollment and need to create a scatter plot that pulls label data from a column that the scatter coordinates are not based on. Here are the details: I have a student information spreadsheet with columns for name, GPA, ACT score, and scholarship amount awarded. I have built a scatter plot based on GPA and ACT score, but I need the labels for each point to display the scholarship amount, not the coordinate GPA and ACT. If I could add a "z series" that would do the trick, but of course scatter plots aren't designed for 3d. Any ideas?

  • Answer:

Hi. This method takes a bit of time, but is simple to do. Add your data labels. Now, click a single data label twice so that label is the only one selected. In the formula bar type =C2 (C2 being the first scholarship amount.) That data label will change to the value in C2. Repeat for each label.
