Why is my Malfunction Indicator Light on?

Why is my malfunction indicator light on and my engine revving by itself in my 2003 jetta?

  • I have a manual 2003 Jetta. I noticed my malfunction indicator light (MIL) came on tonight while driving. I also noticed that my engine revs itself while I'm stopped at a red light (even in neutral, foot off gas) up to about 1500 RPM, and drops back down to 1000RPM. It will go through this cycle about every 5 second, however stops when I'm driving and in gear. This is a new thing, and i think its related to the MIL being on. Any idea what's wrong?

  • Answer:

First have it scanned by a professional- DON"T go to Autozone as they only hire idiots. My best guess is that the TPS (throttle position sensor is bad). But that's a guess. You need to get it scanned.

I would have to say the car is not breathing (o2 sencer) right or you have a dirty throttle body.
